President Donald Trump was watching the LIV Golf Bedminster tournament at his New Jersey golf course Sunday when North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) jets intercepted two small private planes that violated restricted airspace over the area.

NORAD said F-16s scrambled after the aircraft entered a temporary flight restriction zone around Bedminster. Such zones are set up during high-profile events to prevent unauthorized flights near protected figures or sensitive locations. The restrictions are common when a former president is present, especially one who remains a polarizing political figure. Trumpโ€™s golf club has hosted multiple high-profile tournaments since joining the Saudi-backed LIV Golf circuit in 2022, drawing international attention and large crowds.

The intercepted planes were described as general aviation aircraft, meaning small, privately owned planes not operating under commercial flight plans. NORAD did not disclose details about the pilots or their intentions, but such intercepts are standard procedure when unauthorized aircraft enter restricted zones. The agency said all intercepted planes complied with instructions and were safely escorted out of the area. Local law enforcement and Secret Service were also aware of the situation, though no public disruption to the golf tournament was reported.

This incident highlights ongoing security challenges around protectees in public settings. Since leaving office, Trump has frequently traveled between his properties, including Mar-a-Lago in Florida and Bedminster in New Jersey, both of which are heavily secured. Temporary flight restrictions are routinely extended during his visits, and unauthorized airspace incursionsโ€”whether accidental or intentionalโ€”trigger immediate military response. While most incursions are minor, they underscore the persistent need for vigilance in protecting high-profile individuals in an era of evolving security threats. Aviation authorities have warned general pilots to carefully check flight plans and airspace restrictions to avoid unintentional violations, as unauthorized entry can lead to rapid and forceful interception by military aircraft.
