Three people are behind bars after a 2โ€‘yearโ€‘old girl was mauled to death by a dog in Arkansas, authorities say. Police arrested the mother, her boyfriend and a friend on Tuesday after an investigation into a fatal attack that occurred near a wooded area outside Pine Bluff on Sunday night. The girl, named Lily, was pulled from her stroller and dragged into the woods, where the dog bit her repeatedly until she died.

The case has drawn attention because Arkansas has a high rate of dogโ€‘related incidents. In 2023 alone, the state recorded 1,200 reported dog attacks, with 300 involving children. Local officials say the incident underscores the need for stricter enforcement of leash laws and better public education about keeping dogs under control. The dog involved was a 15โ€‘yearโ€‘old mixedโ€‘breed that had previously been reported as loose in the neighborhood. A neighbor called 911 after noticing the animal running through the woods with a toddler in its path.

Police say the trio was found at a nearby residence with the dog in the back yard. They are charged with felony animal cruelty, child endangerment and unlawful possession of a dangerous animal. The mother is held on a $20,000 bond, while the boyfriend and friend are being held without bail. The Arkansas State Police are still gathering evidence, including video from a security camera and forensic reports from the scene. The victimโ€™s family has asked for a swift trial and for the state to review its animal control policies.

The case is set to go before a state judge next month, where the defendants will face potential prison time of up to 20 years for the animal cruelty charge alone. Community leaders are calling for new legislation that would increase penalties for owners who allow dogs to roam unsupervised. The incident has sparked a debate about balancing pet ownership rights with public safety, and the outcome could influence how Arkansas handles similar cases in the future.
