A new playbook has been released that aims to help university leaders navigate increasingly polarized campus politics, according to a report in The Hill. It arrives as institutions grapple with student protests over freeโ€‘speech, climate action and policing, while also facing budget cuts and donor pressure. The guide promises a systematic way to balance stakeholder demands and keep campuses safe and productive.

The playbook was developed by the American Council on Education and the Institute for College Access and Success after a spike in campus unrest during the 2023โ€‘24 academic year. Early adopters, such as the University of Michigan and Stanford, have reported a 15โ€ฏ% decline in protest incidents over the past semester after implementing the playbookโ€™s recommendations. The playbook also includes a toolkit for training staff on deโ€‘escalation techniques and a checklist for reviewing campus policies on free speech and safety.

The playbook will be presented at the upcoming ACE annual conference,
