Caitlin Swann builds 725 sq ft cottage for parents in Austin

Caitlin Swann built her parents a 725-square-foot cottage in her Austin, Texas backyard so they could live closer to their grandchildren and stay independent after retirement.

Her father, Mark, had recently retired from a long career in software, and her mother, Laurie, was set to follow soon. The couple wanted to remain active but also needed support with day-to-day tasks. Swann, a real estate agent, had seen an ad for a "granny pod"—a small, prefabricated accessory dwelling unit designed for aging parents—and decided to take the idea further. Over nine months, she worked with an architect and a contractor to create a standalone home with a bedroom, bathroom, kitchenette, and living space, complete with a private entrance and patio.

The project cost around $150,000, which Swann says was far less than assisted living or even a full-size addition to her house. Her parents moved in last spring, just as Mark and Laurie were winding down from careers and looking for a change. “We wanted to stay near family but not be a burden,” Laurie told local news. The cottage sits just 30 feet from Swann’s back door, close enough for daily visits but with enough separation for privacy. Swann’s two young children, ages 6 and 3, now see their grandparents every day—something she says has enriched everyone’s lives.

The trend of building backyard cottages, or ADUs (accessory dwelling units), has grown as families seek affordable ways to support aging relatives while keeping them close. Cities like Portland, Denver, and Austin have loosened zoning laws to encourage these small homes, citing benefits for both seniors and housing shortages. Swann’s project is part of a wider do-it-yourself movement among millennials and Gen Xers who are rethinking elder care. She now shares her experience online, helping others navigate permits, budgets, and design choices. For now, her parents are thriving—gardening, helping with the kids, and enjoying their new independence.
