New research shows that blue and fin whales are making a comeback in the southeastern Atlantic, with a significant increase in sightings over the past decade. This resurgence comes more than 40 years after the end of commercial whaling, which had nearly wiped out these massive marine mammals. The study, published in the African Journal of Marine Science, analyzed over 60 years of confirmed sightings and strandings along the west coast of Namibia and South Africa.

The findings highlight the slow but positive impact of conservation efforts. Although the overall populations of blue and fin whales remain low, researchers noted a remarkable trend: 95% of all recorded observations of these species occurred since 2012. This suggests that the whales are gradually returning to areas where they were once abundant before whaling decimated their numbers.

Despite the encouraging signs, experts caution that the species still face significant threats. Climate change, ship strikes, and fishing entanglements continue to pose risks to their recovery. Conservationists emphasize the need for ongoing protective measures to ensure that these whales can thrive in their natural habitats.

The increase in sightings of blue and fin whales is a hopeful sign for marine biodiversity in the region. It underscores the importance of continued efforts to protect these magnificent creatures and their ecosystems. As awareness grows and more data becomes available, researchers hope to understand better the factors contributing to this resurgence and what additional steps are necessary for their long-term survival.
