A powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck the Indonesian island of Flores on Saturday, killing at least 53 people and displacing around 5,000 residents. The quake hit just before 06:00 local time, with a shallow depth of 15 kilometers, leading to widespread destruction and fears of aftershocks. Survivors are now facing dire conditions, with many forced to sleep outdoors amid the ruins of their homes.

The earthquake is the deadliest to hit Indonesia since 2022, when a similar disaster in West Java resulted in hundreds of fatalities. Current circumstances are exacerbated by disrupted aid efforts and blocked access routes due to landslides. Many survivors are struggling to find food and clean water, and makeshift emergency tents have been erected as local hospitals remain inoperable. Health facilities have suffered extensive damage, with the Ruteng Regional General Hospital reporting the collapse of its roof, rendering critical services unavailable.

Residents are expressing frustration over the slow response from authorities. Rista Mari, a public relations officer at the Ruteng hospital, stated that promised medical assistance has yet to arrive. Local journalist Herry Kabut highlighted the desperate situation, noting that residents have set up their own evacuation points due to a lack of government guidance. โ€œBasic necessities are in great demand, and many have fled to the hills and are starving,โ€ he reported.

As the situation unfolds, the full extent of the disaster remains unknown. The Indonesian National Disaster Management Agency has reported significant damage, with over 1,000 homes, schools, and health facilities affected. Residents like Charles Abar are calling for immediate relief efforts, emphasizing the need for emergency supplies and shelter. The community's resilience is being tested, and the urgency for support is greater than ever.
