NASAโ€™s Deep Space Climate Observatory released a striking image on Tuesday that shows the continents of Earth appearing to move across the planetโ€™s surface as the seasons change, a visual effect created by the planetโ€™s 23.5โ€‘degree axial tilt. The picture was taken by the EPIC camera aboard the spacecraft, which sits at a stable point about 1.5โ€ฏmillion kilometres from Earth, giving an uninterrupted view of the entire globe.

The tilt of Earthโ€™s axis is the reason we have winter, spring, summer and autumn. As the planet orbits the Sun, the tilted axis points alternately toward and away from the star, changing the angle of sunlight that reaches each hemisphere. From a distant, fixed perspective the result is a slow, seasonal drift of the illuminated landmasses. Scientists have long known this effect, but a clear, highโ€‘resolution composite that captures the shift over a full year has never been released to the public before.

The EPIC camera records the Earth in fifteen narrowโ€‘band wavelengths every few hours. For the new image, engineers stitched together data from twelve months, aligning the planetโ€™s position at the same local time each day. The resulting mosaic shows Africa moving northward into the Sunโ€™s direct glare in June, then sliding southward toward the winter sun in December. Researchers say the visual is a powerful tool for teaching climate basics and for illustrating how subtle changes in Earthโ€™s orientation affect weather patterns. The image has already been shared widely on social media, sparking discussions among educators and climate advocates.

NASA plans to publish a series of seasonal mosaics throughout the next year, each highlighting a different aspect of Earthโ€™s climate system, such as cloud cover and vegetation health. The agency also hopes the images will support outreach programs in schools and help the public understand the mechanics behind seasonal weather changes. By making the data openly available, NASA aims to encourage citizen science projects that track longโ€‘term shifts in the planetโ€™s climate.
