Israeli bulldozers tore through homes in the southern Lebanese villages of Zawtar al-Sharqiyah and Zawtar al-Gharbiyah on Tuesday as tanks rolled through the border area, flattening buildings and sparking furious protests from residents still reeling from weeks of cross-border fire.

The demolitions came despite ongoing U.S.-mediated talks between Lebanon and Israel aimed at easing tensions after months of escalating clashes that have displaced thousands and left dozens dead on both sides of the border. The move raises fresh questions about whether diplomacy can keep pace with the rapid deterioration on the ground.

Witnesses described tractors smashing through walls while families stood helpless, some carrying children away from the dust and rubble. Local officials said at least six homes were destroyed in Zawtar al-Sharqiyah alone, with more targeted in Zawtar al-Gharbiyah. The Israeli military said the structures were being removed because they were being used for military purposes by Hezbollah, the Iran-backed group that has traded fire with Israel since the war in Gaza began last October.

Lebanon’s caretaker government condemned the demolitions as a violation of sovereignty and a deliberate escalation. Analysts warn this could push Lebanon closer to all-out conflict just as diplomatic efforts appear to be gaining traction. The U.S. has been pushing for a ceasefire deal that would include the return of displaced civilians, but these latest actions suggest both sides may be preparing for a longer fight. With Hezbollah and Israel exchanging daily strikes, the risk of miscalculation remains high—and civilians on both sides are paying the price.
