Anthony Michael Hall says John Hughes once dreamed up a *Breakfast Club* sequel where the original five students reunite in their 30s, long after their Saturday detention ended.

Hall, who played the brainy nerd Brian Johnson, revealed the idea during an appearance on *The Rich Eisen Show*. He recalled that Hughes, the iconic writer-director behind the 1985 classic, frequently mused about revisiting the characters as adults. โ€œIt was something that was on his mind, the idea of bringing back the *Breakfast Club*,โ€ Hall said. โ€œLike, those five people in their 30s, dealing with the same issues.โ€ Hughes died in 2009, leaving behind a trove of unproduced scripts and half-formed ideas. Though no formal sequel was ever made, the concept has lingered in fan circles for decades, fueled by the castโ€™s enduring popularity and the filmโ€™s lasting cultural footprint.

Hughesโ€™ proposed sequel would have flipped the script on the originalโ€™s coming-of-age format. Instead of rebellious teens navigating peer pressure, the story would have followed Brian, Claire, Andrew, Allison, and John as working adults still grappling with expectations, failures, and identity. Hall suggested the tone would have stayed true to Hughesโ€™ style: sharp, empathetic, and quietly funny. The idea resurfaced in part because the castโ€”now in their late 50s and early 60sโ€”remains tight-knit. Molly Ringwald, who played Claire, has previously spoken about the emotional weight of the original and the difficulty of revisiting such personal material. But Hallโ€™s comments are the first to confirm Hughesโ€™ direct involvement in sketching a follow-up.

If a sequel ever happened, it would likely require Hughesโ€™ estate to greenlight the project and the surviving cast to reunite. The estate has historically protected his legacy, and while interest in reboots is high, Hughesโ€™ work is often seen as untouchableโ€”too beloved, too specific to be replicated. Still, the appetite for a mature, character-driven reunion remains. The original *Breakfast Club* endures because it captured teenage angst with uncommon honesty. A grown-up version could explore how those same wounds fester or heal over time. For now, itโ€™s just a tantalizing โ€œwhat if.โ€ But Hallโ€™s words give fans one more reason to imagine five adults, still stuck in detentionโ€”just with mortgages and midlife crises.
