Kimi Antonelli could become Formula 1’s youngest world champion on Sunday at the United States Grand Prix after clinching a surprise pole position at the Circuit of the Americas, edging Red Bull’s Max Verstappen by 0.179 seconds. He starts the race from the front while his Mercedes teammate George Russell and Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton line up fifth and sixth, respectively, meaning a win for Antonelli would secure the title.
Antonelli’s pole comes after a season in which Mercedes’ early dominance has been challenged by McLaren and Red Bull, leaving the championship wide open until now. He leads Russell by 102 points and Hamilton by 111, a margin that makes the title almost inevitable for him unless something dramatic happens to his rivals. The points gap means that even a modest finish could be enough, but a victory would remove any doubt.
The 22‑year‑old said he is treating the weekend like any other, focusing on one race at a time, but admitted the atmosphere feels different. “It does feel a little bit different,” Antonelli told the BBC, adding that he is enjoying the extra freedom behind the wheel. He celebrated his pole with a whoop over the team radio and noted that a close group of friends and family, including his father Marco, helped him stay relaxed by playing cards and keeping evenings low‑key. Verstappen, who has four world titles, told Antonelli he simply needs to try and win the race, reminding him that the championship will arrive one way or another.
If Antonelli wins Sunday, he will lift the trophy in Austin and cement his place in history. If he falls short, the math still favours him; he would only need a modest result while his rivals finish poorly. The race will therefore be a decisive moment, not just for the title but also for a young driver who has already shown the composure to handle pressure and the joy of racing at the highest level.
