The image, captured by the Hubble Space Telescope, highlights NGC 4676 (the "Mice Galaxies"), NGC 520, and Arp 240—each caught in violent mergers that trigger bursts of star formation. These events are critical to understanding galaxy evolution, as they transform spiral galaxies into elliptical ones over billions of years.
Galaxy mergers occur when gravitational forces pull two or more galaxies together, a process that has shaped the cosmos since the Big Bang. The Hubble data reveals tidal tails—streams of stars and gas ripped from the galaxies—stretching across thousands of light-years. Such interactions were far more common in the early universe, when galaxies were closer together, but continue today at a slower pace. The upcoming APOD image offers a snapshot of this dynamic process, linking past and present cosmic history.
The three galaxy pairs were selected for their scientific value and visual drama. NGC 4676, 300 million light-years away, shows two spiral galaxies mid-collision, their long tails resembling mouse tails, hence the nickname.
