NASA’s Astronomy Picture of the Day on September 19, 2026 showed a stunning view of the zodiacal light, the faint glow that traces the Sun’s ecliptic. The image was taken by the European Southern Observatory’s Very Large Telescope at La Silla in Chile, and it highlights the dusty fan that surrounds the Sun and extends across the sky after sunset or before sunrise.

The zodiacal light has fascinated observers for millennia, but it is only in recent years that scientists have begun to understand its origin and structure. The light comes from tiny dust grains that drift inward from the asteroid belt and comet tails. In 2026 the Parker Solar Probe was collecting data on the density and composition of this dust, and the APOD image was taken during the same observing window, providing a direct visual link to the probe’s measurements.

The photograph is more than a pretty picture; it gives researchers a new benchmark for testing models of how dust moves under the Sun’s gravity and radiation pressure. By comparing the brightness pattern in the image with data from Japan’s IKAROS dust detector, scientists were able to fine‑tune calculations of the Poynting–Robertson effect, which slowly pulls dust into the inner solar system. The refined models will help predict dust impacts on spacecraft and improve designs for future missions.

The APOD feature comes just before the launch of NASA’s Interplanetary Dust Explorer, scheduled for early 2027. The new spacecraft will map dust distribution at 1 AU and send real‑time data back to Earth. The image will also be used in planetarium shows and educational programs worldwide, sparking public interest in the hidden structures of our solar system.
