Apple’s having an event in just a few days . The company hasn’t publicly acknowledged what it’ll announce at the Steve Jobs Theater next week, but we’re expecting to get our first official look at the next slate of iPhones, among other things, including the company’s first foldable. Looking further ahead, a new report out today is giving us an idea of what Apple might get up to next year and beyond — including, apparently, some kind of AI-powered home security system.

Writing for Bloomberg , Mark Gurman says that Apple is “planning a privacy-centric home security camera and automation device” that’ll integrate with “a new home security and monitoring service.” It’s purportedly meant to launch next year.

Gurman says that the security device will use AI to monitor your home “instead of actual video footage.” I’m not really sure what to make of that, since Gurman also describes the device as a camera, but the takeaway here is that Apple’s getting into the monitored home security space. The device will be part of “the biggest run of device releases in its history,” comprising dozens of launches over the next couple of years.

Google’s connected ecosystem includes both first-party Nest security cameras, as well as third-party models that integrate with the Google Home platform. But Google hasn’t offered its own home security monitoring device since the Nest Secure was discontinued in 2020.

Google currently partners with ADT for professional home security monitoring. Gurman says Apple’s upcoming security device will work with a new monitoring service; it’s not clear whether Apple will provide that service under its own brand or as a partnership with an established security brand.
