Apple is reportedly expanding its digital ID capabilities in the United States, with North Carolina confirming its participation in the program. The state's Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) announced plans to launch a mobile ID initiative this December, adding to the 14 states where Apple's digital IDs are already available.
This development comes as states increasingly adopt digital solutions for identification. North Carolina's DMV will initially offer the mobile ID through its NC Wallet app. Early next year, the program is expected to expand to major digital wallet platforms, including Apple Wallet, Google Wallet, and Samsung Wallet. Residents with a valid North Carolina driverโs license or state ID can set up their mobile ID at no additional cost, making it a convenient option for many.
More than 250 airports across the U.S., including Charlotte Douglas International and Raleigh-Durham International, are equipped to accept these mobile IDs at TSA checkpoints. Law enforcement agencies will also recognize them as valid identification. However, the DMV advises residents to carry their physical IDs as a backup, especially as businesses transition to accepting mobile IDs.
In addition to North Carolina, Apple Wallet may soon support digital IDs in Oklahoma, Utah, and Virginia, according to reports. However, there is no timeline for when these states will roll out the service. Currently, Apple Wallet supports digital IDs in 14 jurisdictions, including Arizona, Maryland, and California, reflecting a growing trend toward digital identification in everyday life.
