Farmers across the UK are facing severe challenges as a prolonged drought ravages the land, marked by record-low rainfall and soaring temperatures. In Cambridgeshire, Tom Pearson, who runs Manor Farm near Cambridge, has witnessed the soil on his land crack open, a direct result of the lack of moisture. With nearly three-quarters of England now classified as being in drought, farmers are grappling with the consequences of an exceptionally dry growing season, which has seen the driest July since records began in 1836.

The current crisis is not an isolated incident. This yearโ€™s drought marks the third in five years and follows a pattern that has led to widespread concern. The arrival of the fifth heatwave this summer has intensified the situation, with many regions receiving less than 10% of their average monthly rainfall. Jamie Burrows, chair of the National Farmersโ€™ Unionโ€™s Combinable Crops Board, noted that the early harvesting of winter wheat reflects the difficulties faced by arable farmers. He called for urgent government investment in drought-resistant crop varieties and improvements in water storage infrastructure to mitigate future risks.

Despite the hardships, some farmers are adapting to these changing conditions. Pearson, who has been working to improve the resilience of his soil for over a decade, has shifted toward regenerative farming methods. This includes using ancient grain varieties, such as einkorn and emmer wheat, which have deeper root systems and are better suited for drier conditions. These methods may offer a glimmer of hope for farmers trying to navigate an increasingly unpredictable climate.

The implications of this drought extend beyond the fields. As agricultural yields decline, food prices could rise, affecting consumers throughout the UK and beyond. The National Drought Groupโ€™s chair, Helen Wakeham, has characterized the situation as โ€œexceptionally serious,โ€ warning that the long-lasting impacts of repeated droughts could reshape the agricultural landscape. The urgency for a coordinated response from both farmers and policymakers has never been clearer as the UK confronts the realities of climate change and its effects on food production.
