Chinese President Xi Jinping is set to meet with United States President Donald Trump at the White House this week. This marks the first state visit by a Chinese leader in over a decade, highlighting the ongoing tensions and competition between the worldโs two largest economies. The meeting comes at a time when both nations are grappling with significant trade disputes and a fierce race for dominance in artificial intelligence.
The talks will focus on the fragile trade truce established after the two countries faced escalating tariffs and trade barriers since Trumpโs return to power in January 2025. After imposing tariffs on Chinese goods, trade between the U.S. and China fell sharply in 2025, declining nearly 30% compared to previous years. In contrast, China's trade with other countries has surged, leading to a $1.2 trillion global trade surplus last year. The dynamics of this trade war have shifted, raising questions about who is truly benefiting from these ongoing economic confrontations.
A recent Congressional Research Service report revealed that by July 2026, the average tariff on Chinese goods entering the U.S. stood at 36.5%, while U.S. goods faced an average tax rate of 31% when entering China. These figures mask a complex landscape of product-specific tariffs, with rates for some Chinese products, such as copper, reaching as high as 73.6%. Conversely, China maintains significant tariffs on U.S. imports, including a 20% duty on crude oil and up to 77% on U.S. beef. The tariffs have led to a near stalemate in trade, with both sides imposing additional restrictions even as they prepare to discuss the future of their tenuous agreement.
As the leaders convene, the stakes are high. The tariff truce, which is set to expire on November 10, has not stopped Washington and Beijing from continuing their restrictive measures. Recently, the U.S. banned imports of humanoid robots from China and imposed sanctions on Chinese shipping firms. In response, Beijing has indicated it will take necessary measures to protect its interests. The outcomes of this summit could significantly impact global trade dynamics and shape the future of U.S.-China relations.
