Asian stock markets mostly declined on Tuesday, following a negative performance on Wall Street the previous day. Traders are remaining cautious ahead of key interest rate decisions from the US Federal Reserve, the Bank of England, and the European Central Bank later this week. Most Asian markets finished lower on Monday, contributing to the overall bearish sentiment in the region.

The Federal Reserve is expected to slow the pace of interest rate hikes to 25 basis points. However, traders are particularly focused on the accompanying statements for insights into the future direction of monetary policy. This uncertainty is contributing to hesitance among investors, who are avoiding new long positions amid concerns over future economic conditions.

In Australia, the stock market showed some resilience, with the benchmark S&P/ASX 200 index gaining 4.70 points, or 0.06%, reaching 7,486.40. This slight recovery comes after Monday's losses and is supported by gains in financial and iron ore mining stocks. Major miners like BHP Group and Rio Tinto saw increases, while technology stocks struggled, with companies like Block and Appen experiencing declines. The broader All Ordinaries Index, however, fell by 1.30 points, reflecting mixed performance across sectors.

In economic news, retail sales in Australia dropped by a seasonally adjusted 3.9% in December, falling short of expectations. Despite this monthly decline, retail sales increased by 7.5% year-on-year. Meanwhile, private sector credit rose by 0.3% in December, also below the anticipated growth of 0.5%. The Australian dollar is currently trading at $0.705. As markets navigate these economic indicators and upcoming interest rate decisions, investors will be closely watching for signs of stability or further volatility in the weeks ahead.
