Audible launches AI interactive stories in July
Audible will launch AI features in July allowing users to question characters and alter plot paths. This innovation aims to boost engagement and retention by transforming passive listening into interโฆ
Audible announced on Tuesday that it will roll out AIโpowered character guides and interactive story features across its audioโbook platform, starting in the next quarter. The new tools let listeners ask questions of characters and choose story paths, creating a twoโway conversation with the narrative. The company said the changes are part of a broader push to make audio experiences feel more personal and engaging.
The move comes as generativeโAI technology has moved from hype to everyday use. Amazon, which owns Audible, has invested heavily in AI, from its Alexa voice assistant to its own contentโgeneration services. Audibleโs user base of roughly 10โฏmillion members has shown a growing appetite for more interactive media, and the company wants to keep pace with rivals such as Spotifyโs โPlay It Forwardโ and Apple Podcastsโ liveโaudio shows. By adding AI to its library, Audible hopes to increase time spent on the app and attract creators who can build branching, chooseโyourโownโadventure stories.
Under the new system, a listener can tap a characterโs avatar and type a question. The AI, trained on the bookโs text and voice actor recordings, will generate a response that matches the characterโs tone and personality. In some pilot stories, users can also influence plot twists by selecting options, and the narrative will adjust in real time. Audible said the feature will debut on its flagship app in the U.S. in July, with a global rollout to follow. The companyโs chief product officer said the goal is to โmake stories feel like living conversations.โ
If the experiment succeeds, Audible plans to open a developer portal so thirdโparty authors can create their own interactive books. The company expects the feature to drive higher subscription renewal rates and attract new listeners who want a more immersive experience. Industry observers note that this could set a new standard for audio storytelling, forcing competitors to adopt similar AIโenabled interactivity to stay relevant.
