After struggling with various franchises in the 2020's, Baker Mayfield finally found a career resurgence in Tampa Bay. But with the veteran quarterback's contract with the franchise ending following the 2026 season, it's not certain he'll be with the Buccaneers beyond this coming year. And if the two parties do part ways, one analyst believes there is a perfect landing spot for Mayfield.
According to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, if Mayfield does end up a free agent next year, there is a "perfect fit" for the two-time Pro Bowl selection . That landing spot would come team that is widely expected to be in the market for a quarterback following the 2026 season – the Pittsburgh Steelers .
"I would make a beeline for Baker Mayfield," Florio said regarding the team's potential search for a quarterback next season.
Aaron Rodgers will be returning for a second straight season to serve in the starting quarterback role for the Steelers, reuniting this season with former head coach Mike McCarthy after the pair won a Super Bowl together for Green Bay. But Rodgers has also announced that this coming season will be his last, and while Drew Allar , Mason Rudolph , and Will Howard remain on the roster, it's not unreasonable to assume the Steelers could go after a more proven commodity like Mayfield.
Mayfield passed for 3,623 yards, 26 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions last year, and also added 382 rushing yards (a career-high) and one rushing score. His best season yet in the league came in 2024, when he threw for 4,500 yards, 41 touchdowns, and 16 interceptions, while adding 378 rushing yards and 3 touchdowns on the ground.
