A group of Afghan women footballers, now known as Afghan Women United, has reunited in New Zealand for a training camp and two friendly matches against the Cook Islands. This gathering marks a significant moment for the 23-player squad, as it is the first time they have come together since FIFA announced in April that they could represent Afghanistan in official matches again. Previously, the Taliban's restrictions on women and girls, which began after their return to power in August 2021, had made it impossible for the team to play or even train together.

The formation of Afghan Women United came after years of campaigning and the evacuation of former national team members from Afghanistan to countries like Australia, the UK, and Portugal. Under Taliban rule, women's participation in sports, education, and many professions was severely limited. The new refugee team now has the opportunity to qualify for international competitions, including the Olympics and World Cup, thanks to FIFA's ruling that allows them to compete without the approval of the Afghanistan Football Federation, which is currently under Taliban control.

As the players prepare for their matches, emotions run high. In a hotel room in Auckland, Manozh Noori, a 23-year-old player from Australia, reflects on her journey. Growing up in Kabul, she played football in the streets with boys, often hiding her passion for the sport due to familial disapproval. Despite these challenges, she rose to prominence in Afghanistan’s football scene, winning titles and awards. Now, she and her teammates are ready to make their mark on the international stage, embodying the spirit of resilience and hope for Afghan women everywhere.

The reunion not only symbolizes a return to the sport for these athletes but also serves as a powerful statement against the ongoing oppression of women in Afghanistan. As they take the field, they carry with them the dreams of countless girls who aspire to play football and pursue their goals, despite the risks they face. The matches in New Zealand represent a new chapter for Afghan women's football, one filled with potential and the promise of a brighter future.
