Wireless earbuds have become a $10-billion-a-year category and this week Wired put 117 pairs through anechoic chambers, treadmills and commuter trains. The judges now say four models—Apple’s AirPods Pro 3, Sony’s WF-1000XM5, Bose QuietComfort Ultra and Samsung’s Galaxy Buds3 Pro—rise above the rest.

2026 is the first year every mainstream brand ships active-noise-cancelling earbuds with spatial-audio processing and multipoint Bluetooth. Apple’s AirPods Pro 3 finally cracked 50 hours of total battery with the case, while Sony’s XM5 added the new V2 chip that cuts latency below 30 ms for gaming and video calls. Bose leaned into the “ultra” branding with lossless LDAC support so Android users hear CD-quality audio, and Samsung’s Buds3 Pro became the first to fold the stem into the shell, shaving another two grams off the weight.

Prices are climbing: Apple is $249, Sony $279, Bose $299 and Samsung $229. Buyers today are trading cheaper fitness buds for these pricier all-rounders because the tech inside now rivals over-ear headphones. A Wired survey of 2,000 readers found 61 percent would pay more for spatial-audio earbuds if they lasted through two gym sessions without a recharge. In the lab, Apple’s transparency mode still lags behind Bose’s when wind hits 12 mph, and Sony’s multipoint drops one call every forty minutes under crowded Wi-Fi.

Next month Apple is expected to unveil AirPods Max for ears, borrowing the same chip and ANC stack, while Samsung plans Buds3 Pro+ with on-ear controls. Analysts at Counterpoint say the high-end tier will grab 35 percent of the market by 2027, up from 22 percent now. For anyone still rocking 2019 earbuds, the jump in battery, sound and comfort is now big enough to justify an upgrade.
