Blockstream launches Swaps for Bitcoin cross-chain transfers

Blockstream has launched a new tool called Swaps that lets Bitcoin users move funds seamlessly between the Lightning Network and the main Bitcoin blockchain without trusting a third party. The feature went live on Wednesday, giving users a trustless way to swap bitcoins from one network to the other in minutes. It arrives just as the community searches for alternatives after Boltz, a popular swap service, suspended operations earlier this month.

Swaps matters because Bitcoin’s Lightning Network, designed for fast and cheap payments, still relies on users moving funds back and forth to the main chain. Before this, most relied on custodial services like Boltz or fixed-term submarine swaps that locked up funds for hours or days. Blockstream’s Swaps uses a peer-to-contract protocol built on its Liquid sidechain, allowing Bitcoin to move directly between networks without intermediaries. It’s part of Blockstream’s broader push to make Lightning more usable for real-world spending while keeping custody in the user’s hands.

The service is already live on Blockstream Green, the company’s Bitcoin wallet, and available to any wallet that integrates the Swap API. Users can swap any amount between 0.0001 and 4 BTC with fees as low as 0.1%, and the process takes under five minutes. Early feedback from Lightning developers suggests the tool could reduce reliance on centralized swap providers and improve liquidity across both networks. So far, Blockstream hasn’t disclosed user adoption numbers, but the timing—coming right after Boltz’s shutdown—hints at urgent demand.

What happens next depends on adoption by other wallets and exchanges. If more platforms integrate Swaps, it could become the standard way to move Bitcoin between networks without custodial risk. Blockstream plans to open-source parts of the protocol, potentially encouraging wider use. In the longer run, tools like this could help Lightning mature by making it easier for users to move funds in and out without friction.
