BP reported a profit of $5.73 billion for the second quarter of 2023, marking the highest earnings since 2022. This surge comes as the ongoing conflict in the Middle East drives oil prices to unprecedented levels. The companyโs profits more than doubled from $2.35 billion during the same period last year, reflecting the impact of the Iran war on global oil and gas supplies.
The crisis in the Middle East has disrupted key shipping routes, particularly through the Strait of Hormuz, which is vital for oil transport. As a result, crude oil prices have soared, with BP noting that Brent crude averaged $103.85 per barrel in the April-to-June quarter, compared to $67.88 a year ago. This spike has not only benefited BP but also rival companies like Shell, which recently reported similar profit increases. The rise in oil prices has led to higher petrol and diesel costs, aggravating inflation and energy expenses for consumers worldwide.
Environmental and social advocates have criticized BP for what they call "profiteering" during this crisis. Campaigners argue that the company's record profits are disconnected from the public good, especially as many people struggle with rising living costs. Angharad Hopkinson from Greenpeace highlighted the disparity, noting that BP's financial gains come at a time when energy prices are burdensome for average consumers.
Despite the strong financial performance, BP's chief executive, Meg O'Neill, indicated that the company is not maximizing its potential. She announced plans to move away from renewable energy investments, including divesting its U.S. renewable natural gas business. O'Neill emphasized a focus on "value, not sentiment," as BP prepares to sell its North Sea operations, ending a 60-year history in that region. Analysts suggest this strategic shift aims to streamline BP's operations and make the company resilient against volatile oil prices in the future.
