A Brazilian footballer tumbled down a stadium tunnel after an over-exuberant goal celebration, seconds after his strike was ruled offside.
Jacy Maranhão, playing for Maranhão Atlético Clube in Brazil’s Série D, leapt onto advertising boards behind the goal to mark his equalizer against Moto Club on Saturday night. As he cleared the boards, his momentum carried him into the tunnel below. The video shows players laughing as Maranhão clambers up, clearly shaken but uninjured.
The goal was quickly disallowed for offside, piling frustration on top of the tumble. Série D often sees lower attendances and less rigorous pitch-side advertising standards, which can leave gaps behind goals. Players there regularly celebrate by climbing onto boards when space is tight, increasing the risk of falls. Maranhão’s club said he was checked by medical staff and returned to the bench without further issue.
Série D clubs are pushing for better stadium safety after several recent incidents. League officials now plan to review pitch-side advertising and celebration rules to prevent similar mishaps. The incident has gone viral, adding to calls for tighter controls in Brazil’s lower divisions.
