Ukrainian drone explosion near Kardam prompts Bulgaria to enhance airspace security

A Ukrainian drone exploded in a sunflower field near Kardam, Bulgaria, on Saturday, raising urgent questions about airspace security. The incident occurred around 8:10 a.m. local time, just 100 meters from a border checkpoint with Romania. The Bulgarian Defense Ministry confirmed that the drone was a Maya decoy aircraft, designed to deceive enemy drone systems.

This explosion marks the first drone incident on Bulgarian soil since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022. While both Bulgarian and Ukrainian officials have stated that the drone's entry into Bulgarian airspace was not intentional, the situation has sparked political tension. Bulgaria’s Foreign Ministry summoned Ukraine's ambassador on Monday, emphasizing that any unauthorized airspace intrusion is "unacceptable." Kyiv has pledged full cooperation to investigate the circumstances surrounding the event.

Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev reported no casualties or infrastructure damage but noted that the drone was carrying a "significant amount of explosives." However, local officials downplayed the severity, indicating that the explosion did not create a crater and only damaged a few sunflowers. The drone fell within a kilometer of a compressor station on the Trans-Balkan gas pipeline, which connects Turkey and Ukraine, heightening concerns about national security and critical infrastructure.

The incident has prompted a reevaluation of Bulgaria's defense capabilities. Defense Minister Dimitar Stoyanov acknowledged the need for new anti-drone systems and radar technology, stating that existing defenses were inadequate. Bulgaria plans to acquire up to 10 anti-drone systems through the EU's SAFE mechanism and to expedite radar purchases. However, Stoyanov cautioned that even these enhancements would not provide comprehensive coverage, highlighting the increasing urgency for Bulgaria to bolster its air defense amid ongoing regional tensions.
