An official petition in Canada seeking the expulsion of U.S. Ambassador Pete Hoekstra has garnered over 171,000 signatures, significantly exceeding the 500 required for discussion in the House of Commons. The petition was launched on July 21 and has rapidly gained traction, reflecting rising tensions between Canada and the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump.

The petition accuses Hoekstra of making statements that undermine diplomatic relations between the two countries. Notably, he has defended Trump's controversial remarks about making Canada โ€œthe 51stโ€ U.S. state and criticized Canadian officials for ads challenging Trumpโ€™s tariff policies, which have adversely affected Canada. These comments have intensified Canadian resentment toward the U.S. administration, particularly in light of Trump's recent imposition of new tariffs on Canadian goods.

Authorized by Elizabeth May, leader of the Green Party, the petition outlines three main demands. It calls for the Canadian government to declare Hoekstra persona non grata, initiate discussions on his actions in relation to the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, and direct a parliamentary committee to investigate U.S. diplomatic interference in Canadian affairs. While the petition is non-binding, it is a clear indication of widespread dissatisfaction among Canadians regarding U.S. influence.

As the petition continues to gain signatures, it remains uncertain how Parliament will respond. The House of Commons is required to provide an official response within 45 days of reaching the signature threshold. The overwhelming support for this petition highlights the ongoing friction in U.S.-Canada relations and may signal a growing willingness among Canadians to confront perceived diplomatic overreach by the U.S. government.
