Canva, the well-known Australian design platform, has announced significant layoffs affecting 22% of its workforce, equivalent to 1,271 employees. The move follows what co-founder and CEO Melanie Perkins described as "the hardest moment in our thirteen-year history." The changes will involve job cuts, role relocations, and shifts in responsibilities as the company aims to streamline operations amid challenging market conditions.

This decision comes as Canva faces mounting pressure from concerns about the impact of artificial intelligence on its business model and the rising costs associated with integrating AI technologies into its services. Earlier this year, Perkins noted that Canva's growth had slowed for the first time in a decade, marking a shift in the company's trajectory. These developments have prompted two of its major investors, Blackbird Ventures and Airtree, to downgrade Canva's valuation from A$60 billion to approximately A$49 billion.

In addition to job cuts, the company will centralize more of its product teams in Sydney, which will become the primary office for these teams. Starting next year, hybrid workers will also be required to spend two to three days a week in the office. Perkins acknowledged the difficulty of these decisions, emphasizing the impact on employees who have contributed to Canva's growth and success over the years.

The future of Canva hinges on how effectively it can adapt to the evolving technological landscape. As the company navigates these changes, it aims to leverage new AI capabilities to enhance user experience and product offerings. The outcome of these strategic shifts will be critical in determining Canva's position in a competitive market that increasingly prioritizes innovative design solutions.
