Middlesbrough stun Wolves, Wrexham to reach Carabao Cup semis

Middlesbrough stunned Premier League teams Wrexham, Wolves and Stevenage to reach the Carabao Cup semi-finals under the guidance of young manager Michael Lankshear.

The Championship side’s 2-0 win over Stevenage at the Riverside Stadium secured their place in the last four of the competition for the first time since 2021. The tie went to penalties, where Middlesbrough keeper Liam Roberts saved two spot-kicks.

Now, Middlesbrough face either Manchester United or Fulham in the semi-finals, with the first leg likely to be played in mid-January. Their cup run could provide a financial boost through TV revenue and prize money, potentially funding transfers or wage bills during a financially tight period. It also offers a morale lift for fans frustrated by the club’s inconsistent league performances. While promotion remains the priority, cup success could ease pressure on Lankshear and the board. For a club with a proud history but recent struggles, this unexpected run is a rare bright spot.
