Casey's General Stores, Inc. (NASDAQ:CASY) just delivered a 27.7% jump in fiscal 2027 first-quarter EPS and kept its full-year guidance intact. Yet the stock sold off after the report, leaving Wall Street to debate a less obvious question: did Casey's actually stumble, or did investors simply expect too much from a company that had been executing almost too well?
Wells Fargo thinks the selloff says more about expectations than the business itself. While calling Q1 a miss against elevated investor expectations, the firm argued that Casey's General Stores, Inc. (NASDAQ:CASY) underlying growth model remains intact and that the lower valuation makes the shares more appealing. BMO reached a similar conclusion, pointing to healthy traffic and Casey's 7.7% two-year increase in inside same-store sales.
There is plenty in the quarter for the bulls to work with. Prepared Food & Dispensed Beverages same-store sales rose 4.8%, with a 10.7% two-year stack and gross margin expanding 130 basis points to 59.3%. Total inside gross profit climbed 6.3% to $749.8 million. KeyBanc also saw the pullback as an attractive entry point, noting that shares trade at 26.7 times its new fiscal 2028 EPS estimate.
BofA kept Buy and called Casey's General Stores, Inc. (NASDAQ:CASY) a top-tier convenience and retail operator, although it cut its target to $875 from $975 to account for near-term noise and a category re-rating. Deutsche Bank raised its target to $933 from $927 with Buy, while RBC lowered its target to $910 from $913 with Sector Perform.
The problem is that Casey's General Stores, Inc. (NASDAQ:CASY) strongest earnings driver came from a part of the business that can swing quickly. Fuel margin reached 47.8 cents per gallon, up 6.8 cents year-over-year, pushing fuel gross profit 19.6% higher to $446.9 million. Fuel same-store gallons, however, slipped 0.3%.
Stephens cut its target to $750 from $975 but kept Overweight, saying the EPS beat was driven by stronger fuel margins while inside-store comps and fuel gallons came in softer than expected. Goldman Sachs likewise kept Neutral while lowering its target to $750 from $795, citing fuel share gains, strong fuel margins, and a lower effective tax rate behind the earnings beat.
KeyBanc expects fuel-margin improvements to moderate and noted that inside sales have lost some momentum. Wells Fargo also suggested Q1 could prove an unusually strong fuel-margin period as Casey's faces tougher industry trends inside its stores.
There is a near-term operational headwind, too. CEFCO remodeling disrupted roughly 1% of the store base in Q1, and management expects the next tranche to create an even larger drag before the benefits emerge, potentially not until Q4.
