Hurricane Polo strengthens to Category 5, threatens Mexico's southwestern coast

Hurricane Polo has intensified into a Category 5 storm, making it one of the most powerful cyclones to hit the Pacific in decades. The storm was recorded with maximum sustained winds of 165 mph (265 kph) as it neared Mexico's southwestern coast on Tuesday, September 21, 2026. At the time, Polo was situated approximately 210 miles (338 kilometers) south of Zihuatanejo and was expected to move northwest, potentially avoiding landfall.

The urgency surrounding Hurricane Polo has escalated due to its rapid intensification and the recent history of destructive storms in the region. Residents along Mexico's Pacific coast are on high alert after experiencing severe impacts from previous cyclones. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has indicated that experts believe Polo will not make landfall, but the National Hurricane Center has warned that hurricane-force winds extend up to 40 miles (65 kilometers) from its center, with tropical storm-force winds reaching as far as 105 miles (169 kilometers).
