Celanese Corporation reported a decline in profit for the second quarter of 2023. The chemical and specialty materials company announced net earnings of $125 million, or $1.13 per share, down from $197 million, or $1.80 per share, during the same period last year.
This drop in profit comes at a time when the company is facing various market pressures. Despite the decrease in net earnings, Celanese saw its net sales rise to $2.75 billion, up from $2.53 billion a year earlier. This increase was driven by a 4% rise in sales volume and a significant 14% increase in pricing. The mixed results reflect the complex landscape of demand and cost management in the chemical industry.
In terms of earnings from continuing operations, Celanese reported $1.15 per share, a decrease from $1.89 per share a year prior. However, on an adjusted basis, earnings improved to $2.45 per share, compared to $1.43 per share in the previous year. Looking ahead, the company forecasts adjusted earnings for the third quarter to be between $1.35 and $1.75 per share and maintains its expectation of full-year adjusted earnings around $6.00 per share.
These results highlight the challenges and opportunities Celanese faces as it navigates a fluctuating market. Investors will be closely watching the company's performance in the upcoming quarters to see how it adapts to ongoing economic conditions and whether it can sustain its sales growth amidst rising costs.
