Adm. Brad Cooper, commander of U.S. Central Command, visited the USS Abraham Lincoln on Saturday after the aircraft carrier returned to the United States. The ship had been docked in the Persian Gulf for more than 260 days, a deployment that stretched the crew’s endurance and raised concerns about their mental wellbeing. Cooper called the visit “awe‑inspiring” and said he was there to check on the sailors and address their mental health needs.
The carrier’s long stay in the Middle East is part of the U.S. Navy’s effort to keep a forward presence in a volatile region. But extended deployments can take a toll. Sailors face cramped conditions, high operational tempo, and the stress of operating in a conflict zone. Recent reports have shown a rise in anxiety, depression and post‑traumatic stress among crews that have spent months away from home. In 2023, the Navy announced a new “Mental Resilience Initiative” that provides on‑board counseling, peer‑support programs and digital tools for stress management. Cooper’s visit follows a series of high‑profile incidents in which service members were found to be in crisis while on duty.
During the tour, Cooper met with the ship’s medical staff and listened to sailors’ concerns. He announced that the ship will receive additional mental‑health resources, including a full‑time psychologist and an expanded tele‑health service. The Navy will also conduct mandatory mental‑health screenings for all crew members before they leave port and will track outcomes to improve future support. The carrier’s return to the U.S. will allow the Navy to evaluate the effectiveness of these measures and share lessons with other vessels.
