A Vatican commission has officially recorded the deaths of more than 1,700 individuals who died for their faith in the 21st century, according to a brief statement released by the Holy See. The figure, compiled by a panel of theologians and historians in Rome, covers the period from 2001 to 2023 and includes people killed in conflict zones, by religious persecution, and in acts of violence that the Church has deemed martyrdom.

The tally matters because it is the first comprehensive count of modern martyrs since the Churchโ€™s last major review in the 1970s. The Vatican has long used martyrdom as a basis for beatification and canonisation, and the new data could accelerate the process for many of those who died in the past two decades. The commissionโ€™s work builds on earlier studies that listed about 400 martyrs in the early 2000s, and the jump to over 1,700 reflects a sharp rise in targeted killings of Christians in places like Syria, Iraq, and parts of Africa and Asia.

What has driven the increase is a mix of geopolitical conflict and religious extremism. In the last two decades, the rise of groups such as ISIS and the continued violence in the Middle East and Sub-Saharan Africa has put Christian communities at risk. The commission notes that many of the victims were ordinary parishioners, teachers, or religious sisters who were martyred while carrying out their everyday duties. The methodology involved crossโ€‘checking church records, eyewitness reports, and civil death registries to ensure accuracy. The Churchโ€™s own documentation of martyrdom is now more systematic, with a clearer set of criteria for what constitutes a death โ€œfor the faith.โ€

Following the release, the Vatican plans to open a formal review of each case for possible beatification. The process will involve verifying the circumstances of each death, gathering testimonies, and confirming that the individuals died โ€œin hatred of the faith.โ€ If the review concludes that they meet the Churchโ€™s criteria, they could be declared venerable or beatified, and eventually canonised. The move is expected to prompt a wave of new saints, and it may also influence the Churchโ€™s engagement with persecuted communities worldwide, as it highlights the ongoing risks faced by Christians in conflict zones.
