OpenAI has launched a new feature for ChatGPT called "Computer History," which allows the chatbot to track user activities across websites and apps. This update is part of the recent improvements made to the GPT-5.6 models, enhancing the chatbot's accuracy and reasoning abilities. The feature is designed to help users by recalling previous activities, such as asking, "What was I debugging yesterday?" and receiving accurate reminders based on their past interactions.

The introduction of Computer History comes at a time when OpenAI is looking to expand its capabilities and enhance user experience. This optional feature aims to create a timeline of user activities, turning data into memories that the chatbot can reference later. Unlike Microsoftโ€™s controversial Windows Recall tool, which faced backlash for its default settings and privacy concerns, Computer History is opt-in. Users can choose which apps and websites to include in the feature, providing a layer of control over their data.

Despite these safeguards, there are still potential risks. OpenAI has warned that Computer History may contain sensitive information, and the data is not encrypted. Other programs on a user's computer could potentially access this information, raising questions about privacy and data security. Users need to weigh the benefits of having a more responsive AI assistant against the risks associated with sharing their activity data.

The feature is available for desktop Mac users who subscribe to ChatGPT Pro, Business, or Enterprise plans. However, it will not be accessible in certain regions, including the UK, Switzerland, and the European Economic Area. This update replaces the previous Chronicle research preview, signaling OpenAI's ongoing effort to innovate while addressing user concerns about privacy and functionality.
