Colin Kaepernick accused Jay-Z of having a “guilty conscience” over business deals with the NFL and Target in an interview with NBC News ahead of the release of his memoir, “The Perilous Fight.”

The tension between the two men dates back to 2018, when Jay-Z’s Roc Nation helped negotiate a series of NFL pre-game performances and social justice initiatives after league owners blacklisted Kaepernick for kneeling during the national anthem. Kaepernick, who has not played in the NFL since 2016, saw the arrangement as a betrayal of the protest movement he started. Jay-Z defended the deal as a pragmatic step toward change, but Kaepernick has argued it amounted to a payoff to silence him.

In the NBC interview, Kaepernick said Jay-Z’s partnerships with the NFL and Target prove he “has a guilty conscience.” He questioned the sincerity of the deals, which included a $25 million campaign with Target last year tied to Juneteenth. Kaepernick also pointed to Jay-Z’s public statements about supporting athletes’ rights while privately profiting from the league. “The goal was never to make things easier for the NFL,” he said. “It was to hold them accountable.”

The dispute highlights the broader debate over athlete activism and corporate partnerships. Kaepernick’s memoir, set for release this month, frames his protest as part of a fight against systemic racism, not just a football issue. Jay-Z’s involvement in the NFL’s initiatives has drawn criticism from activists who argue the league used social justice to rebuild its image without meaningful reform. Kaepernick’s comments suggest the rift will widen as his book amplifies his critique, putting pressure on Jay-Z and the NFL to respond. The fallout could shape how athletes and entertainers navigate activism in the years ahead.
