A powerful magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck western Colombia on Monday morning, causing widespread devastation and prompting urgent rescue efforts. The quake, which hit at 7:34 a.m. local time, has resulted in at least 254 confirmed deaths across the country, with the hardest-hit areas being the cities of Pereira and Cali. Rescue teams are working tirelessly to sift through the rubble of collapsed buildings in hopes of finding survivors amid the destruction.

The tremor's timing has added urgency to the rescue operations, as many families are still searching for missing loved ones. The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs reported that around 5,000 homes were damaged, and numerous buildings, particularly residential structures, have been reduced to rubble. Local residents expressed disbelief at the scale of the destruction, with one Cali resident, Maria Isabel Cumbal, stating, โ€œI never thought I would see my city like thisโ€ as she watched rescue efforts unfold at the collapsed Vanessa Building.

Rescue workers are employing hammers, shovels, and heavy machinery to navigate the debris, focusing on the Vanessa Building, where approximately 20 individuals are believed to be trapped underneath. Among those are an estimated 17 children from a nearby nursery that was also affected by the building's collapse. Local volunteer Maximiliano Herrera, who is coordinating rescue efforts, shared that two children have shown signs of life but remain in a precarious location within the rubble.

As the rescue efforts continue, the community has rallied together, with hundreds of volunteers forming human chains to help clear the debris. Many are left anxiously waiting for news about loved ones who lived in the Vanessa Building. Former resident Samir Valencia, who moved away just a year ago, found it too overwhelming to assist further, saying, โ€œI wanted to stay, but I couldn't.โ€ The tragedy has highlighted the vulnerability of the region and raised questions about the future of affected communities as they begin to grapple with both loss and recovery.
