Carrie Ann Morneault faces $600 in denied medical claims over name length

A Colorado woman is facing mounting medical bills and denied insurance claims due to the length of her name. Carrie Ann Weinberger Morneault, whose name consists of four words and 28 letters, has struggled to get her Medicare Advantage coverage from HealthSpring, formerly Cigna, since switching insurers last year.

This issue highlights a little-known character limit for names within the Medicare system. Weinberger Morneault discovered that her name was often abbreviated or misspelled on medical claims, leading to confusion that made it appear as though the claims were for different individuals. As a result, her claims for essential services like physical therapy and mammograms were rejected, and she is now facing nearly $600 in unpaid medical bills, some of which have been sent to collections. “This whole process really wears on your mental health and well-being,” she said.

While the Medicare website does not mention any character limits or potential issues arising from long names, HealthSpring stated they are committed to resolving member concerns but did not comment on the specifics of Weinberger Morneault's situation. Although one of her claims has been settled without her understanding how it happened, she continues to deal with the stress of outstanding bills and the impact on her healthcare decisions.

Weinberger Morneault's experience is not isolated. A July 2026 Commonwealth Fund survey found that 21% of working-age adults with private insurance faced denied claims for doctor-recommended treatments. Of those, 70% incurred extra expenses, and 43% are still struggling with medical debt. Many reported that these experiences made them hesitant to seek healthcare, illustrating a broader issue within the healthcare system that affects millions of Americans.
