More than 100 crypto projects have shut down in the first half of 2026, a collapse that mirrors the dot-com bust of the early 2000s and wipes out billions in investor money.
The wave of failures marks the end of a two-year boom that saw venture capital pour $32 billion into 450 crypto startups in 2024 alone. Many of those bets were on speculative tokens, flashy โWeb3โ apps, and automated trading bots that promised big returns but never turned a profit. Now, with interest rates high and appetite for risk fading, the money spigot has been turned off. Projects that survived on hype, not revenue, are folding overnight. CoinDesk tracked 114 closures in the first six months of 2026, including high-profile failures like NFT lending platform Arcane Finance and algorithmic stablecoin project TerraNova.
The carnage cuts across the industry. In May alone, 34 projects announced shutdowns, including gaming studio PixelPlay and decentralized exchange WaveSwap. Their collapse left 2,800 employees without jobs and erased $1.4 billion in market value overnight, according to data from Messari. Investors who poured money into โutility tokensโ hoping for long-term gains now hold worthless paper. Regulators, who had largely stayed on the sidelines during the boom, are now circling, with the SEC and EUโs MiCA rules tightening scrutiny on exchanges and issuers.
What happens next looks like a long winter for crypto startups. The survivors will be the ones with real revenue, not just whitepapers and influencer endorsements. Many will pivot to AI or enterprise blockchain to stay alive. Others will be acquired at fire-sale prices. For the broader market, the shakeout could clear out bad actors and restore some trustโbut only after another wave of layoffs and lost savings. The dot-com bust took nearly five years to recover from. Cryptoโs reckoning is just beginning.
