CVS Health reported strong earnings for the second quarter on Wednesday, surpassing analysts' expectations and raising its guidance for 2026. The company, which operates the largest pharmacy chain in the United States, announced a net income of $2.98 billion, or $2.31 per share, significantly up from $1.02 billion, or 80 cents per share, during the same period last year. CVS also raised its full-year adjusted profit forecast to between $7.90 and $8.10 per share, compared to its previous estimate of $7.30 to $7.50.

The positive results stem from improvements in CVS's insurance unit, Aetna, which has shown signs of recovery amid ongoing challenges in the healthcare sector. CVS's decision to raise its revenue outlook for 2026 to at least $414 billion, up from a prior estimate of $405 billion, reflects confidence in its insurance and retail pharmacy segments. However, the company is cautious about the rest of the year due to high medical costs and broader economic uncertainties.

Despite the strong performance, CVS shares fell more than 8% in premarket trading, indicating mixed investor sentiment. All three of CVS's business segmentsโ€”insurance, pharmacy, and health servicesโ€”exceeded Wall Street's revenue expectations. Investors are particularly focused on Aetna's performance as the company navigates high medical costs associated with Medicare Advantage plans. Aetna's medical benefit ratio improved to 87.4%, showing progress in managing these expenses.

Additionally, CVS announced a collaboration with Eli Lilly to make its obesity treatments more accessible through the CVS Health app. This initiative, set to launch in early Q4, will allow eligible patients, including those without insurance, to access the new weight loss medications Zepbound and Foundayo. The combination of strong earnings and new initiatives positions CVS well as it continues its broader turnaround strategy, which has included cutting costs and streamlining operations.
