Darline Graham challenges Shontel Brown for Ohio Senate seat

Ohio Democrat Darline Graham is mounting a primary challenge against Rep. Shontel Brown to succeed her late brother, Sen. Sherrod Brown, in next year’s Senate race.

The special election to fill the unexpired term—ending in November 2025—turns the race into a referendum on Democratic unity just six weeks after Sherrod Brown’s sudden death. Brown, a four-term incumbent and progressive stalwart, died on April 19 from complications of pneumonia at age 71. Graham, a community activist from Cleveland, argues the party needs to recommit to working-class voters like her brother did. Brown’s endorsement went to Shontel Brown, a Cleveland-area congresswoman seen as more moderate and aligned with party leadership. Graham fired back that Brown’s legacy demands fighters, not establishment favorites.

Polls show Shontel Brown holding a commanding lead, with 45% support to Graham’s 15% among likely Democratic primary voters, according to a late May Suffolk University survey. Graham counters with a grassroots surge, banking on labor unions and Black voters in Cleveland and Akron who remember her brother’s coalition. She’s raised about $200,000 so far—far behind Brown’s $1.2 million haul—but argues money won’t beat authenticity. The primary is August 6, with early voting starting July 16.

If Graham wins, she faces Republican Bernie Moreno, a wealthy businessman and Trump ally, in a swing-state race that could decide control of the Senate. If she loses, Democrats risk a bruising intraparty fight that could weaken morale ahead of November. The outcome tests whether progressive energy can overcome institutional backing in a state that’s trended blue but remains competitive. Sherrod Brown’s death has turned a routine Senate race into a family legacy showdown—and the first real test of Democratic cohesion in Ohio this cycle.
