Memphis Depay has publicly criticized Brazilian club Corinthians for what he calls "unacceptable behavior" after the team decided not to renew his contract. The former Manchester United and Barcelona forward, who joined Corinthians in 2024 on a two-year deal, is now a free agent. He claims the club's management breached a previously agreed extension, which he says was confirmed by both the president and various departments within the organization.

Depay's comments come at a time when Corinthians, currently seventh in Brazil's Serie A, are navigating financial challenges. The club stated that extending Depay's contract would jeopardize their fiscal stability. In a statement, Corinthians explained, "It became clear that taking on a new commitment of this magnitude would not be compatible with the financial balance we need to preserve to ensure the institution's sustainability." The decision to part ways with Depay reflects broader economic pressures faced by many clubs in Brazil.

In his statement on social media, Depay expressed disappointment and emphasized his previous respect for the club. He stated, "I didn't want this situation... but now I am forced to react strongly in order to preserve my interests." He also hinted at more public comments to come, indicating that he intends to address the situation further. During his time with Corinthians, Depay scored 20 goals in 79 appearances and contributed to the club's triumphs in the Copa do Brasil in 2025 and the Supercopa do Brasil this year.

Looking ahead, Corinthians president Osmar Stabile is expected to hold a press conference in the coming days to discuss the decision not to renew Depay's contract. As the situation develops, it remains to be seen how both parties will move forward and how this may impact Depay's career as he seeks new opportunities. The fallout from this dispute could also shape how other clubs approach contract negotiations with players in the future, particularly in a financially constrained environment.
