The patient had no history of overseas travel and had been living in the same suburb for 20 years, making the diagnosis even more surprising.
Pathologists confirmed the organism was a larval tapeworm (Taenia sp.) measuring 4โฏcm in length. The patientโs preโoperative scans had shown a 3โcm mass, and her blood work revealed a mild eosinophilia, a common sign of parasitic infection. The surgeon, Dr. Lisa Ng, said the discovery was โunexpected but not entirely out of the realm of possibility.โ She added that the patient will receive a course of antiparasitic medication to ensure any remaining larvae are eradicated.
