An experimental vaccine could soon be available to the public in the Democratic Republic of Congo after early signs it works against a rare Ebola strain now spreading there.

The Ervebo shot is already licensed against the common Zaire strain, but fresh data from animal tests suggest it may also shield people from the rarer Bundibugyo strain. WHO experts say the early results are promising enough to fast-track discussions with regulators about wider use. Congoโ€™s health ministry has reported dozens of cases in a new outbreak that began in May.

Dr. Paulin Mutombo Beya, deputy director at the Kinshasa School of Public Health, told France 24 that the vaccineโ€™s track record against Zaire gives doctors a head start. โ€œWe have solid evidence in humans for the Zaire strain,โ€ he said. โ€œThe Bundibugyo data are still early, but the animal trials are encouraging.โ€ He stressed that any rollout would depend on Congoโ€™s national regulators and WHO approval, likely within weeks if the evidence holds.

If the vaccine proves effective, it could be a game changer in a country where Ebola has killed thousands in past outbreaks. Bundibugyo is less deadly than Zaire but still kills around 30% of those infected. A single shot could simplify Congoโ€™s response, cutting the need for multiple vaccines or treatments. Health teams are racing to trace contacts and contain the spread while waiting for the green light on the new option.
