A drone image of a halfโ€‘dismantled liquefied natural gas tanker on the mudflats of Bangladeshโ€™s Bay of Bengal has won the overall prize in the 2026 Siena Drone Photo Awards, photographer Georgeโ€ฏSteinmetz announced on Thursday. The picture, titled โ€œShipbreaking on the mudflats, Bay of Bengal,โ€ shows the massive steel hull looking like a futuristic spacecraft stranded on a golden beach, captured from high above the 13โ€‘mile coastal strip north of Chattogram.

The award comes as the worldโ€™s shipโ€‘breaking industry, especially in the Global South, is under intense scrutiny for its environmental and safety record. Bangladesh is a hub for dismantling decommissioned vessels, where crews of up to 60 workers use blow torches, winches and the tide to strip ships of metal parts that are later sold overseas. Steinmetz, who has been studying the relationship between human activity and the environment for a book project, said he was drawn to the site because it represents one of the planetโ€™s largest recycling operations. He spent weeks surveying the coastline with his drone, searching for a vessel in a striking stage of disassembly, and eventually secured permission from the shipโ€™s owner to fly over the LNG tanker despite local photographers warning that access would be nearly impossible.

In an interview with NPR, Steinmetz described the challenges of photographing a site that is both hazardous and tightly guarded. He noted that the industry faces criticism from environmental groups for chemical runoff, from labor unions for unsafe working conditions, and from NGOs for a lack of regulation. The timing of his flight was crucial; he had to capture the scene when the tide was low enough for the winches and boats to pull the wreckage ashore, creating the surreal composition that judges praised for its visual impact and storytelling power.

The win highlights the growing role of aerial photography in exposing hidden aspects of global industry and may bring renewed attention to the conditions of shipbreakers in Bangladesh. Advocates hope the visibility will spur stricter environmental safeguards and better safety standards, while the industry watches to see whether the spotlight will translate into concrete reforms or simply add another striking image to the worldโ€™s visual archive.
