A drone exploded in Bulgaria on Saturday near the Trans‑Balkan gas pipeline that links Turkey to Ukraine. The incident happened just a kilometre from the Kardam border crossing with Romania and close to the pipeline’s compressor station. The same week, German armed‑forces officials reported that two drones were sighted at 10 p.m. on Thursday at a military base in Mechernich, North Rhine‑Westphalia, about 35 km from the Belgian border. A separate drone was found late Tuesday at Leipzig/Halle Airport, a civilian freight hub that also hosts Ukrainian Antonov cargo aircraft.

The rise in unmanned aircraft over European airspace follows months of heightened tension after Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Analysts say the surge of drones reflects Moscow’s attempts to pressure NATO allies and test their defensive readiness. The European Commission has warned that Russia’s use of drones over Romanian airspace marked a new “line” crossed in the conflict. NATO officials, including Chief Mark Rutte, have described Moscow’s behaviour as reckless and a danger to all member states.

Reactions to the incidents have been swift. Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev released a government video showing the drone’s explosion and urged vigilance. In Germany, a Bundeswehr spokesperson said troops were deployed to the Mechernich site and that police were investigating. German media highlighted that the base houses a high‑security underground facility for military spare parts and a maintenance hub for U.S. Patriot air‑defence systems. The Russian embassy in Berlin dismissed the Leipzig drone as a “fabricated provocation,” calling the accusations against Russia baseless.

The events underscore the fragility of European security and the need for NATO to strengthen its rapid‑response capabilities. German officials have not publicly blamed any state for the drones, but some politicians point fingers at Russia. NATO and EU leaders continue to hold Russia responsible for past sightings, and the U.S. ambassador to NATO has pledged to defend every inch of alliance territory. The new drone incidents may prompt a review of Germany’s defence posture and could trigger a broader debate on how NATO members will protect critical infrastructure from asymmetric threats.
