Gene sequencing by the World Health Organization shows that the latest Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo actually began three months earlier than the May emergency declaration. The virus was silently spreading in North Kivu province from February, long before health teams confirmed cases in April. The delay highlights gaps in early detection in remote, conflict-hit regions where surveillance is weak and trust in authorities is low.
This isnโt the first time Ebola has gone undetected before official alerts. In 2018, a similar delay occurred in the same province, allowing the virus to spread across borders into Uganda. The WHO says that weak health systems, community mistrust, and ongoing violence by armed groups make it hard to trace cases quickly. Local health workers often face harassment or attacks, slowing response efforts. Without early detection, outbreaks grow faster and cost more to contain.
The new sequencing data suggests the outbreak may have started even earlier than February, possibly in January. So far, it has killed 23 people and infected 59, according to the latest WHO update. Health teams are now trying to trace โPatient Zeroโ to understand how the virus entered the community. But with limited access to conflict zones, vaccination teams rely on community leaders to help identify cases. The outbreak is the third this year in Congo, and the second-largest ever in the country.
If the outbreak had been declared sooner, early vaccination could have saved lives. The WHO says itโs pushing for faster genomic surveillance in high-risk regions. Meanwhile, Congoโs health ministry is asking for $50 million in emergency funds to scale up response efforts. Without it, the outbreak could spiral furtherโespecially as people travel for upcoming elections in neighboring countries. The lesson is clear: better early detection saves lives, but in places like eastern Congo, thatโs still not happening fast enough.
