F1 reduces race distances to 300 kilometers for 2027 season

The FIA confirmed on Tuesday that race distances will be trimmed for the 2027 Formula 1 season, cutting the standard 305‑kilometre length to roughly 300 kilometres on most circuits, with a few venues seeing a larger reduction to keep race times under 90 minutes.

The change follows years of criticism that Grand Prix lengths have stretched beyond the sweet spot for fans and drivers. Over the past decade, tighter sprint formats and longer race distances have pushed average race times toward two hours, prompting concerns about driver fatigue, tyre degradation and the sport’s carbon footprint. Teams have also struggled with the growing cost of tyre sets as circuits become more abrasive. The FIA’s sustainability targets, which aim to cut the sport’s emissions by 20 percent by 2030, have added pressure to shorten on‑track running and reduce fuel consumption.

Mercedes‑AMG Petronas technical director James Allison said the new limits will force engineers to rethink strategies, especially on circuits where tyre wear has been a decisive factor. Red Bull’s Christian Horner welcomed the move, noting it could make races more exciting by tightening the window for pit stops. Drivers expressed mixed feelings; Lewis Hamilton called the reduction “a sensible step to keep the sport sharp,” while Max Verstappen warned that “any change must preserve the challenge that defines F1.” The sport’s commercial arm, Liberty Media, also sees a marketing upside, hoping shorter races will retain viewers who tend to drop off after the first hour.

The revised distances will be codified in the 2027 sporting regulations, which the FIA will present at its next World Motor Sport Council meeting in November. Teams will have to adapt their car setups and fuel strategies during the 2026 pre‑season testing to meet the new limits. If the changes deliver tighter, more competitive races, the FIA says it will review the format again after the 2027 season to see whether further tweaks are needed to balance excitement, safety and sustainability.
