Farm state Republicans feel the pressure from rising diesel prices

Farm state Republicans are calling on the Trump administration and Congress to take action on rising diesel prices that are squeezing farmers ahead of the November midterms. In Washington on Tuesday, Iowa Senate candidate Rep. Ashley Hinson demanded that the House return to a fuel‑tax relief plan that had been discussed in 2021. She said the steep increase in diesel costs is a political liability for the GOP in the Midwest.

Diesel prices have climbed about 30% in the Midwest since early 2023, adding roughly $5 per gallon to a typical farm’s fuel bill. The surge follows supply disruptions after the Texas winter storm, a rebound in global oil demand, and U.S. policy shifts that cut subsidies for fossil fuels. Farmers in Iowa, Kansas and Nebraska report that the higher cost of diesel is forcing them to cut back on planting or to pay higher freight charges for their crops.

Republican lawmakers argue that the price rise erodes farm profitability and hurts rural economies that depend on agriculture. Hinson and other GOP legislators have introduced a resolution urging the House to adopt the 2021 “Fuel Tax Relief Act” and to work with the Department of Energy to boost pipeline capacity and streamline fuel distribution. They also want the administration to explore temporary tax rebates for diesel used in farming.

The bill will be debated by the House Transportation Committee next month. If passed, it could lower taxes on diesel and increase federal investment in pipeline and rail infrastructure. The move could become a key issue in the midterms, as voters in farm states weigh the cost of living against the GOP’s promises to protect rural communities. Farmers fear that without relief, higher input costs will force them to reduce output, potentially driving up food prices nationwide.
