FC Barcelona are close to signing Manchester City captain Rodri, a move that could force two midfielders out of the club this summer.

The potential arrival of the 27-year-old Spanish international is already reshaping Flick’s plans. Barcelona have one of the most stacked midfields in Europe, with young talents like Gavi and Pedri leading the line alongside experienced players such as Frenkie de Jong and Sergi Roberto. The club has long sought a deep-lying playmaker to control games, and Rodri fits the profile perfectly. His physical presence, passing range, and ability to dictate tempo would add a new dimension to Barcelona’s attack. But with limited spots in the squad, his arrival could push out players like Oriol Romeu or even club legend Sergio Busquets, who is now assistant coach.

Rodri’s contract at City runs until 2025, but Barcelona are reportedly willing to meet his £80 million release clause. City have been reluctant to sell before, but Barcelona’s financial flexibility—boosted by new La Liga rules allowing higher wages—makes them a serious contender. Rodri has also expressed interest in returning to Spain after five years in England, adding urgency to the talks. Meanwhile, Barcelona’s midfield depth means two players could be surplus to requirements. Romeu, 32, is entering the final year of his contract and has struggled for minutes, while Busquets’ role remains unclear despite his leadership qualities.

If the deal goes through, Barcelona would finally solve their midfield puzzle. Rodri’s arrival would allow Flick to shift Gavi and Pedri into more advanced roles, creating a more dynamic and unpredictable attack. But the club must also consider the financial and sporting implications of parting ways with valued squad players. Romeu could leave for free, while Busquets might take a front-office role. For Rodri, the move would reunite him with his boyhood club and fulfill his desire to play at Camp Nou. For Barcelona, it could be the final piece in their rebuilding puzzle—or another costly gamble if squad harmony breaks down.
