The Federal Reserve voted on Wednesday to keep its benchmark interest rate unchanged, leaving the overnight funds rate in the 3.75โ€‘4โ€ฏpercent range where it has sat since a quarterโ€‘point hike in September. The decision was unanimous among the majority of the 12โ€‘member Federal Open Market Committee, signaling a patient stance as the central bank continues to battle stubborn inflation.

Policymakers said the move reflects a desire to gather more data before tightening further. Inflation has lingered above the Fedโ€™s 2โ€ฏpercent target for more than five years and has accelerated since the September meeting. The economy, however, is still expanding at a strong pace, a modest upgrade from the โ€œsolidโ€ growth description used last month. The timing also coincides with the looming November 3 midterm elections, where control of Congress will be decided. Some observers suggest the Fed may be reluctant to raise rates so close to a major political contest, even as officials stress the importance of independence.

Two members broke with the majority. Governor Lisa Cook and Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack voted to raise rates by a quarter point, marking Cookโ€™s first dissent since joining the board in 2022. Their stance echoes earlier calls from Dallas President Lorie Logan and Minneapolis President Neelโ€ฏKashkari, who had also pushed for higher rates at the July meeting. Cookโ€™s dissent comes amid a separate political controversy, as former President Donald Trump continues legal efforts to remove her from the Fed, a fight that recently reached the Supreme Court and is set for another hearing in early November. Vice Chair Philip Jefferson and New York Fed President Johnโ€ฏWilliams said current conditions allow the committee time to assess the next step.

The Fedโ€™s next move will hinge on upcoming inflation reports and broader economic trends. If price pressures remain elevated, the committee may consider a rate hike at its November meeting, despite the political backdrop. A change in policy could affect borrowing costs for households and businesses and shape market expectations ahead of the election. For now, the Fedโ€™s message is clear: it will watch the data closely and act when it deems necessary to bring inflation back to target.
